The ACCC and state and territory consumer product safety regulators play an active role in protecting consumers from chemical hazards in the home.
Chemical hazards & injuries
Many common products contain chemicals that can be hazardous if used incorrectly. Consumers should understand the risks and make sure they're using products that contain chemicals safely.

Chemicals in consumer products
-
Asbestos in crayons
Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and inhalation of fibres can lead to serious diseases. Although asbestos fibres in crayons are bound and present no safety risk, crayons containing asbestos must not be sold. -
Azo dyes
Azo dyes are commonly used to colour a variety of consumer products. A small proportion of azo dyes can be hazardous. -
DEHP in plastic items
DEHP is a common plasticiser, which makes plastics soft and flexible. Plastic products that contain more than 1% of DEHP are permanently banned from sale. -
Electronic cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes simulate the act of tobacco smoking and have not been assessed for quality and safety. -
Laundry capsules
Laundry capsules can be dangerous for children if left within their reach. Make sure you store laundry capsules safely.
Chemical testing & surveys
Suppliers are ultimately responsible for the safety of products they supply. However, the ACCC helps suppliers to comply with product safety laws, and provides supplier guidance on safe concentrations of particular chemicals in consumer goods.
The ACCC conducts chemical testing and surveys of products when there’s evidence of credible concern in the marketplace.
